Your browser draws hidden shapes using your GPU. The exact pixel output is unique to your hardware — trackers use this hash to recognise you even after you clear all cookies.

🔊 Audio Fingerprint

Your sound chip processes a test tone in a subtly unique way. No microphone is used — it is a silent mathematical test that produces a stable identifier from your hardware and OS.
💡 This works identically in private browsing. Brave adds random noise to prevent this identifier.
🔤 Fonts Detected

Fonts installed on your system reveal your OS version, region, and apps. Design fonts or CJK character sets stand out from the average user and narrow your identity significantly.
💡 Tor Browser normalises all fonts to a small standard set — the most effective protection available.
🖥 Screen Resolution

Standard 1920×1080 blends in. An unusual resolution, a high DPI multiplier, or an uncommon monitor size makes you stand out from the crowd and easier to identify.
💡 Never use a privacy-sensitive browser in maximised mode — your window size is part of your fingerprint.
⚙️ Hardware

Your CPU core count and RAM amount hint at your device model and price range. A 16-core machine with 32 GB is far rarer than a 4-core laptop — it significantly narrows the field.
💡 Browsers are gradually moving to reporting rounded values (e.g. 4 cores instead of 6) to reduce this signal.
🎮 GPU Renderer

Your GPU's full driver name is one of the most unique signals. It ties your fingerprint to a specific graphics card model and driver version — very hard to fake without breaking rendering.
💡 Brave adds random noise to the GPU renderer string automatically to prevent this identifier.
🕐 Timezone
—
Your timezone confirms your geographic location independently of your IP address. A VPN routes traffic through Germany — but a Pacific Time timezone is an instant red flag that reveals you are not in Germany.
💡 Combined with your language settings, timezone reliably confirms where you actually live despite a VPN.
🌐 Languages

Your browser reports your preferred languages in order. This reveals your nationality and region — and checks against your IP location. If your VPN says Japan but your languages say "en-US, fr", the mismatch exposes you.
💡 Switching to English-only language settings reduces this signal but can break localised sites.
A VPN hides your IP address. It does not change any of the signals above. Your canvas hash, GPU model, fonts, and timezone are identical with or without a VPN. Trackers that use fingerprinting do not need your IP.
How to reduce your fingerprint
No single step makes you anonymous, but combining defences makes fingerprinting significantly harder.
Use Firefox with privacy.resistFingerprinting — it spoofs canvas output, screen size, timezone, and fonts to match common values
Use Brave Browser — it adds per-session random noise to canvas, audio, and WebGL APIs automatically
Never run your browser maximised on a privacy-sensitive session — window size is tracked separately from screen resolution
Do not mix identities — every account you log into while browsing ties your fingerprint to a real name
Tor Browser gives the strongest protection by normalising almost all these signals, at the cost of speed
Does incognito mode protect me from fingerprinting?
No. Incognito mode only prevents your browser from saving local history and cookies. Your canvas hash, GPU renderer, screen size, and fonts are identical in incognito — any site that fingerprints you in normal mode will recognise you in incognito too.

Fingerprinting reads signals your browser exposes by default — none of these require cookies or local storage.

Cookie blockers and ad blockers do not prevent fingerprinting. They block tracking tags, not API calls that read browser properties.

Even if you clear all cookies and switch IP address, your canvas + font + GPU combination is likely still unique enough to re-identify you.

The only effective protection is a browser that deliberately spoofs these values — like Brave or Firefox with resistFingerprinting enabled.
